MAPPING MAHA`ULEPU
With so much known and being learned about Maha`ulepu, maps are one way to grasp what is there, to see continuities and changes, and to raise and answer questions. Maps help us learn and tell stories about Maha`ulepu.
Today, map making is facilitated by Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS technology combines collection and storage of spacially referenced information (a data base) with cartography (map making) and other analytic tools.
Malama Maha`ulepu undertook its GIS project in order to create an integrated data-base which could be used to:
- Continue to collect and record new information about Maha`ulepu;
- Produce maps which better display and summarize information about Maha`ulepu and its resources (always remembering that some information is kapu and sacred).
- Plan for the future of Maha`ulepu and for future activities of Malama Maha`ulepu by developing a better understanding of the location of sensitive or vulnerable resources as well as to consider potential preservation imperatives and development possibilities.
Development of GIS capability for Malama Maha`ulepu was assisted by a grant from the Environmental Support Center, by assistance from the Hanalei Heritage River Hui and by members throughout the world of the GIS community, including thoughtful personnel at the Hawai`i Office of State Planning.
