A TIMELINE OF MALAMA MAHA`ULEPU: HISTORY AND ACTIVITIES

1974:
Leadership Homes proposes 4 hotels, 2 golf courses, 2667 condo units, and 952 homes. `Ohana O Maha`ulepu forms to contest land redistricting by State Land Use Commission (LUC) from agricultural to urban. Proposal dies.

1988:
LUC approves special use permit for the Hyatt golf course. Malama Maha`ulepu forms, opposes golf course on prime agricultural land. Appeal to Supreme Court loses. Grove Farm plans hotels, golf, commercial development and a marina on the Maha`ulepu coast.

1989:
House Bill 1629 allocates $9,000,000 for land acquisition at Maha`ulepu. Bill not funded.

1997:
Grove Farm plans for luxury resort, hotels golf course and 1-3 acre estates.

2000:
Federal court orders establishment of critical habitat for endangered Kaua`i blind cave spider and cave amphipod.

  • Kaua`i General Plan Update calls for a community based planning effort that engages the owner and local interests, drawing upon the County government, State DLNR and various professional experts as needed. Options for the area includes some development in exchange for a park and/or preservation areas; or purchase of the land for a State park. (Sec. 6.4.4.2(e) & 6.4.4.3)
  • Malama Maha`ulepu re-forms as a proactive initiative to educate and advocate. Support comes from individuals and grant from Sierra Club, a partner in coalition.
  • Produces resource inventory, brochure, video, bumper stickers, web site.
  • Gives presentations and tours.
  • Gathers 4000 signatures on record of support.
  • 700 individuals write postcards to Governor.
  • Steve Case, founder of America On Line, buys Grove Farm Company, Inc.
  • Governor Cayetano says save Maha`ulepu for the people.

2001:

  • Malama Maha`ulepu holds regular meetings, presentations, beach clean-ups, tours.
  • Support comes from Hawaii Community Foundation Natural Resources Conservation Fund.
  • County Council unanimously passes resolution supporting collaborative planning to explore preservation of Maha`ulepu.
  • State House and Senate pass resolution introduced by Representative Bertha Kawakami.
  • Numbers of support letters impress legislators.
  • Field trip shows need to study unexcavated archaeological sites.
  • Malama Maha`ulepu holds community mapping events and photo contest at Koloa Plantation Days.
  • Governor discusses state acquisition of Maha`ulepu to add to string of pearls wilderness parks. Grove Farm states their continuing hope for a quality resort.
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) training and mapping project funded by the Environmental Support Center.
2002:
  • Meetings, presentations, beach clean-ups and tours continue.
  • First newsletter printed and distributed. Donors generously support group.
  • Malama Maha`ulepu receives 501 (c) (3) non profit, tax-exempt status.
  • Photographers and artists donate images for greeting cards.
  • T-shirt designed and produced.
  • Malama Maha`ulepu marches in Koloa Plantation Days Parade, has booth at Plantation Days, County Fair and Hanalei Taro Festival.
  • Kuleana research project begins.
  • Malama Maha`ulepu receives Hawai`i Community Foundation Organizational Capacity Building Grant.
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposes parts of Maha`ulepu for critical habitat designation for blind cave wolf spider and blind cave amphipod. Grove Farm opposes designation. Malama Maha`ulepu critiques Economic Analysis of Benefits and Costs of proposed habitat.
  • Wall St. Journal covers Maha`ulepu - the spider, Case intentions and community hopes.
2003:
